We are asked to hold two things at once: a curiosity about remarkable new AI tools, and a quiet responsibility to protect the developing minds in our care. Where we once worried mostly about screens, the question has deepened. When a machine can remember, answer, and solve on a child's behalf, what happens to the slow internal work — the thinking itself — that builds real understanding?
Researchers have begun to name the risk plainly: a mind that borrows all its answers may never build its own. So the question worth asking is not whether our children will grow up alongside artificial intelligence. They will. It is what they need to build first, so that they meet it whole.
What the Research Tells Us

A recent OECD report on Digital Education looked closely at generative AI in classrooms, and its findings will feel familiar to any Montessori parent. Yes, these tools can enrich learning with personalised support. But their habit of supplying instant answers often bypasses the cognitive effort that true comprehension requires. When the productive struggle is removed, so is the self-monitoring, the judgement, the quiet inner voice that asks: does this make sense to me?
Most sobering is the simplest finding. Performance that depends on a digital scaffold tends to collapse the moment the scaffold is taken away. What looked like mastery was borrowed, not owned. Real understanding is slower to build and harder to see — but it is the only kind that stays.
Where It All Begins

The foundations are laid astonishingly early, long before any meaningful encounter with a screen. In the first years of life, a child is building the very architecture of attention, self-regulation, and motivation — the inner equipment they will one day bring to every tool they touch.
The workshop where this building happens is play. When a toddler tips out a basket, stacks bowls, or returns again and again to the same stubborn puzzle, they are rehearsing inquiry, persistence, and resilience — precisely the capacities no algorithm possesses. A block tower that falls teaches error analysis. A knot slowly untangled teaches patience with the not-yet-solved. No machine can do this practising on a child's behalf, because the practising is the point.
Every time we protect a moment of productive struggle — resisting the urge to rescue, to hand over the answer, to smooth the path — we are making a small deposit in a child's sense of their own capability.
The Human Role Undiminished

Machines process information brilliantly. What they cannot offer is the thing a child actually learns from: the warmth of a caregiver's attention, the moral framing of a gentle conversation, the encouragement that arrives at exactly the right moment because someone who loves you was watching.
A present, attuned adult is the most powerful learning technology ever devised.
No system, however sophisticated, can replicate the experience of being specifically, personally noticed. And it is that experience which teaches a child their discoveries matter, the beginning of all genuine motivation to learn.
Capacities that Endure

If there is such a thing as future-proofing a child, it does not lie in early coding lessons or clever apps. It lies in capacities no wave of technological change can make obsolete: sustained attention, persistence in the face of ambiguity, a body at home in the physical world, and the ability to genuinely connect with other people.
These are built through sensory exploration and rich human encounters. The weight of a wooden bowl. The grain of untreated beech. The surprising coolness of metal, the give of felted wool. A flat image of a thing and the thing itself are not the same lesson. One informs. The other anchors — connecting word to weight, idea to texture, understanding to the body.
Fewer Toys, More Time

A child does not need more things. Repetition is not boredom. It is how a young brain lays down its wiring. The toy that is picked up for the fortieth time is doing more developmental work than the novelty that dazzled for an afternoon.
Fewer toys also quietly returns something precious to the family: time. Time on the floor, together, inside the kind of slow, attentive play that no future technology will ever replace.
The Quieter Argument
There is a louder conversation happening about children and AI — one of urgency, alarm, and acceleration. We would like to offer the quieter argument.
The best preparation for a fast world is a slow childhood. A childhood of natural materials and unhurried mornings, of struggles allowed to resolve themselves, of adults who watch more than they intervene, of quiet joy discovered rather than delivered.
